3 C’s to Serve and Conserve

We only have one planet. Though star wobbles in the vast expense of cold and dark space may reveal the existence of a planet called Keplar 452-b, anyone with an IQ greater than that of a dolphin will happily announce that the first commercial tickets will not be sold before 2250 AD. This being established, what we have left in hand is our own blue planet, an ecology so delicate that even a wrapper discarded on the side walk, kills hundreds if not thousands of species.  July 28. 2020 is celebrated as World Conservation Day, and this year it’s all about minimalism in our debaunch consumerism. Here is how each one of us can, and should contribute to the cause of conservation.

  1. Cutting Excesses: Leading a life of excesses was okay in the feudal and dark ages, for it was only a construct for the uber rich, the king and sultanate leaders. In a modern day life driven by metropolitan monotony, excessive usage of anything can have an adverse effect on the ecology. Avoiding a life of excesses does not require one to stop aspiring for extravaganza, it just means that one should use only what is needed. Using public transport, ditching plastic  throwaways and straws, reducing use of paper, and every come across in context to the environment, is covered under minimalism. One does not need to go live under a tree for attainment, just not asking for extra ketchup sachets will do!
  2. Carbon Footprint: The second ‘C’ of conservation comes from reducing the carbon footprint. The quick millenial mantra for this would be to reduce, re-use and recycle. Carbon footprint is all about how human activities generate greenhouse gasses, which in turn heat up the planet, breaking the natural equilibrium of everything. Conservationists closer to nature will reveal how the temperature difference between urban and rural areas is due to high carbon emissions in urban areas. Conserving water as a finite resource, using renewable energy for electricity requirements, using public transport instead of private ones, making cars and trains electric, not littering non-biodegradable material, and even using the right refrigerator that does not emit heat trapping gasses, all contribute towards mitigating the ill-effects of increasing CO2 in the atmosphere.
  3. Changing Mindset: The final ‘C’, crucial to the science behind conservationism is the evolution of societal mindsets. One needs to be proactive towards the problems of terra firma because problems of the ecology affect all species indefinitely. It is also important to understand that we are the only higher intelligence beings on the planet and as much as dolphins and baboons want to save the earth, the only species that can actually do it is ‘us’. Most people are dropouts from ecological exercises because they believe that one person cannot change anything. A change in mindset, also talks about how each little contribution helps. Shower for a minute less, use less water, feed the stray, don’t capitalise on nature, treat nature as a bare essential, opt for minimalism, and know for sure that we as a cumulative society, owe this planet to the generations to come.

Conservation can come in any form. Adapting greener laws and legislatures, shifting  to green practices at a corporate or domestic level, choosing the few over the new, and reminding oneself that it has to be us that beings in the conservation. With decades of plunder and pillage, the task to conserve has just begun. With famous personalities taking up a global dais, pledging to protect through pretense, is not going to do much change, but surely is a start and it is upon us to maintain the momentum, or find efficient fuel sources that could help us travel at the speed of light.
