Surat’s Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) become the first cooperative society in the country to commercially sell bio-natural gas produced from fruit and vegetable waste to Gujarat Gas Limited. The gas purchase agreement was signed between GGL and APMC. GGl has laid a grid pipeline at the APMC’s plant from where the gas will be transported to it’s transfer station for further supply to consumers.
The bio-CNG is environment friendly and generates zero pollution. APMC generates 35 tonnes of fruit and vegetable waste per day. Earlier APMC was spending Rs. 5 lakh per month for disposal of green waste, but now it is targeting to earn Rs 15 lakh from CNG and organic liquid fertilizer carried per month. APMC will also start selling organic liquid fertilizer to farmers from nearby areas, earning revenue of Rs. 5 lakh per month, which is at present Rs. 1 per kilogram. Experiments of organic liquid fertilizer carried out on different crops have yielded very good result.
These types of initiatives should be taken by the society themselves, i.e, citizens either consumers, sellers or merchandisers. It surely will help reduce and manage heaps of waste with some strong results.
