Non-Marital Violence

One in four of those reporting non-marital violence are adolescents in the 15-19 age group, pointing to higher vulnerability of minors who are also likely to report such instances to police as compared to adult women.

Overall, 2 in 5 female survivors do not inform anyone of sexual violence suffered. Non-marital violence is a ‘pervasive concern’ affecting far greater number of women and adolescent girls than reported cases suggest.

An analysis was done based on a survey of 15 to 49 years age group under NFHS (National Family Health Survey)-4, having below highlights:

  • 31% perpetrators of first incidents are most often men who was either a woman’s current of former spouse
  1. among these 35 percent perpetrators were most often a family member
  2. 24% a friend or family friend
  3. 14% current or former boyfriend
  4. 10% current spouse
  • 30% cases where it was a family member
  • 15% cases where perpetrator was a friend or family friend
  • Rest comes in other various minor categories
  • In case of reporting, 42% neither sought help nor told anyone; only 1.9% reported the violence to the police.

It can be recommended that reduction in stigmatization and improvisation in police response can facilitate victims’ disclosure.
