Lichens fascinate biologists and botanists alike. They are complex life forms arising out of fungus and algae and there are myriad variants, based on the climate they flourish in. Now, pharmacists are trying to understand their properties to develop new drugs to fight incurable diseases. These are some of the toughest organisms known as brave against harsh climatic conditions.
NIPER-Ahmedabad Department is researching new compounds from natural resources including plants and microbes to develop bio-active molecules, including the one extracted from endolichen fungi. The method followed is identified as de-replication, where properties of lichen is ascertained and compounds isolated for medicine development.
Natural compounds, further are preferred because of comparatively low side effects.
