CITIES NEEDS TO RUN FOR A GREEN COVER

It is essential that the growth has some green touch. Below are the several ideas:

  1. Preserving the Lung: We can notice that enough damage has already been occurred, but it’s never too late. Older days and places were full of green colour. To bring back that green cover needs no rocket science, though it would need some time. While fauna, i.e., we people and all animal societies, is the lung of the city, we need to let it breathe! We should not destroy green cover. Rather we help ourselves, add beauty to our surroundings. We need to develop structures around the existing green cover. To make our living spaces, we should not damage the flora. If we are doing this, we should replace it by creating another. There is also a need to end wall to wall carpeting that eats up a whole lot of green space. All housing societies compulsorily need to have common plot that would help us create more green and open space. In some cities, there is a good inclusion of building bye-law; that while approving any residential or industrial plan, there should be some space which should be left without concrete floor. This floor space should be used for creating garden , even in small space. this space also helps in preventing rain water run-off.
  2. Smart  City Planning: Today everything is growing and nothing seems to grow in proportion. Though, Urban Development Association and Municipal Commission of cities have come up with a master plan of building parks and gardens, we still need to have certain community level things keep going. Though we plant lakhs of saplings every year, only 10% survive. We need to be more serious and systematic while planting trees. There needs to be a proper plantation manual for awareness. We need to map trees first and document the existing ones before planting them haphazardly. Ward wise information of all the trees need to be provided to work in a more systematic manner. People should be responsible, that if they are planting, they should involve in giving a proper care of those plants, help in growing.
  3. Green Residential Societies and Education Campuses: These days houses and educational campuses are becoming spacious and beautiful. These sprawling societies and campuses can go a long way in building a solid green cover. We need to utilize and convert the open and concrete space in campuses. Whatever land is there in societies and campuses, left unconstructed, should be covered with lots of flora. If there is less or no land, we should create greenery with the help of potted plants, hanging and wall gardens and so many other ideas can be used. All in all, efforts should not be less.
  4. Vertical Growth and Horizontal Green Sprawl: Mindless urban planning affects the growth of green cover. Vertical growth would help us add to population density, horizontal sprawl will only help us spread thin and wide. When everything fails in place, there is also need for everyone to follow the development control rules, which would help us keep an eye on the sustainability.
