Counter Tactics to cope up with Stress

India is facing an epidemic of suicides with almost 300 humans taking their lives every single day. Mental illness affects 12% of Indians, but the remaining 88% suffer from some form of distress, most of us find ways to reconnect or find joy in doing things that are not defined in medical textbooks.

  • The culture of hobbies has not yet taken off in India in a big way, but there are patients who feel better after learning reiki.
  • Many prefer to take hobies like drawing, photography or gardening in order to learn to unwind.
  • In mega cities, one is likely to find many youngsters who live alone far away from their families. They could suffer from loneliness and also experience anxiety attacks. It is advisable to people to create their own support groups using friends. A good coping mechanism would involve social support in the form of families and friends.
  • People could also take up yoga, meditation or exercise. It releases endomorphins, a chemical released by the brain to reduce pain and in large quantities, makes one feel relaxed and energetic.
  • Pets can be adopted. Their presence has a calming effect.
  • Traveling is also curing. Solo or with friends or relatives traveling to favourite places or exploring new places may reduce stress.

There are many avenues for people to take volunteering with NGOs as it gives them a sense of purpose. People take up Buddhist chanting or cooking classes.

Such coping skills may not immediately help those with severe depression who may need medication and counseling.
