In a bid to lower the carbon foot print, special economic zones (SEZs) across Gujarat will be made more environment friendly. Special initiatives including afforestation, shifting to renewable energy for power requirements and usage of electrical vehicles and bicycles for internal transport will be introduced in industrial clusters. As the first step towards launch of a special afforestation drive, 50 thousand trees will be planted at Kandla SEZ in Kutch. This concept is supported by all developers and units as well as the local trade associations. this will not only help in promoting exports but will also contribute in reducing country’s carbon foot prints.
The SEZ units owners have come together to fund sewerage treatment plant. The treated water from this will be utilised to nurture the land under afforestation. Another aspect of the green initiative is to convince the SEZ developers and units to shift from thermal power to non-conventional solar and wind power. Now it has become cheaper, so by this dependence on coal based electricity can be reduced.
Internal transport from coming January, within Kandla SEZ will be done using bicycles or electrical vehicles. Transporting containers and goods vehicles only will be allowed inside the SEZ and private vehicles will be parked outside the campus. People either can use bicycles or electric vehicles to move inside the campus.
