Clean City Policies

Indore bagged the tag of Cleanest City of India. Similar policies should be included as below-

  1. Employment of more squad members to teach citizens to segregate waste. They should accompany door-to-door garbage collection vans for initial months.
  2. NGOs with volunteers were roped to explain sorting, segregation and raise public awareness.Theme song should be played by the garbage vehicles wherever they halt to pep residents.
  3. Door to door garbage collection services for households including slum areas and illegal colonies.
  4. Commercial establishments should  avail garbage collection services twice a day.
  5. A separate collection system with bigger vehicles should be put in place for bulk waste generators.
  6. Community waste bins should be removed, as they create more filthy places.
  7. Ragpickers only should be employed to sort dry waste into 12 different categories.
  8. The ward head should have personally the power to charge a fine upto Rs. 1 Lakh.
  9. The trenching ground should have a massive shed to wash all the Nigam trucks. No trash can be spotted sticking onto the trucks as is commonly seen elsewhere.
  10. A  plastic recycling center should be installed which compresses plastic and sells it to a road building company or a cement plant.

The Indore model will fail if residents are not made aware of the importance of waste segregation. Taking the community into confidence by responding to their sanitation complaints, effective litter policing, employing ragpickers and making solid waste management processes transparent and deliverable is the key to success.
